Following the film's 20th anniversary, Rebecca Romijn reflected on her portrayal as Mystique. When Looper asked her about the most memorable component of her X-Men role, the actress revealed what it felt like to transform into a mutant:
I'm guessing it was the cosmetics. It wasn't a joke! My call time was at midnight, and I had to be ready at 9 a.m. It took nine hours to do makeup. We did manage to cut it down to seven hours over the course of three movies, but it was still... It was a major event. And I knew right away that was the job for me. I was being compensated for my participation in the makeup application. The acting was uninhibited. The task was to put on all of that makeup!
